The surprise hit of the summer was without a doubt Bad Moms. It earned over $112 million at the domestic box office against its modest $20 million budget. The film featured Mila Kunis , Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn as overworked mothers who decide to duck their responsibilities as mothers and become loose women who just want to party and enjoy life again. In my review of the film I mentioned that the premise was interesting as the film flips the script in terms of our leads and takes its time to highlight the sacrifices mothers make for us. A big criticism I had with the film was that it didn’t exactly have balanced look at parenthood as Fathers were depicted to be mostly absent. Another thing i didn’t mention in the review however is the fact the movie is only concerned with suburban white moms. It looks like the distributor of the film STX has plans to make this movie into a franchise as they plan to expand the Bad Moms brand with ” a series of film spinoffs, a reality television show , short form digital content, and a robust consumer products program”.
Deadline reported that a spinoff named Bad Dads is planning to make its way to US theaters for July 2017. Despite this pleasant piece of news STX has made no formal announcements in terms of Bad Dads casting , a director , or even a script ; more details will be announced “in the coming weeks”. Bad Dads is scheduled to arrive in theaters July 14 , 2017.
