Walt Disney are going through their catalogue of animated features and will stop at nothing until live-action adaptations of these works are a reality. We have already seen Maleficent , Pete’s Dragon and Beauty and Beast is the next line ( its set for a March 2017 opening). We also got news that Jon Favreau the director behind the technical marvel of The Jungle Book will also be directing a remake of The Lion King in the same manner.
The latest disney feature to get the live-action treatment is Mulan, a 1998 animated tale based on the world famous Chinese legend. The original story follows the titular character, a young woman living in ancient China who disguises herself as man to partake in the battle against the army of Huns invading China. It was a critical and commercial success as it drew in $304 million worldwide in theaters and landed an oscar nomination for its score that included classics like “Be a Man”. It really isn’t a surprise that Disney have commissioned a remake of this classic . The remake was initally written by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin but is now being rewritten by Rick Jaffa who are known for their work on Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Jurassic World as well as one of the four Avatar sequels currently in development. The film still has no director and is currently searching for a chinese actress to take the lead role.
Variety has reported that Disney has scheduled the live-action Mulan will hit theaters on November 2nd 2018.
